Richard "Rick" Russell Riordan Jr., known colloquially by his fan base as "Uncle Rick," is an American author. He has written five book series and several standalone novels that use various mythologies as inspirations for stories told in the modern day. His first series was Percy Jackson & the Olympians, a hexalogy based on Greek mythology. His second series was The Kane Chronicles, a trilogy based on Egyptian mythology. His third series was The Heroes of Olympus, a pentalogy that combined elements of Greek and Roman mythology. His fourth series was Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, a trilogy based on Norse mythology. His fifth and most recent series was The Trials of Apollo, a pentalogy that again used Greek and Roman mythology. Since then, he has published two standalone novels: Daughter of the Deep and The Sun and the Star. Collectively, his works are referred to as the "Riordanverse."

Cultural impact[]

The works by Rick Riordan have served as a major cultural influence today. The first two novels in Percy Jackson & the Olympians were adapted into widely criticized films, the former of which is currently being adapted into a Disney+ television series. His works have spread awareness about various mythologies towards a modern audience, even to the point of influencing the neo-pagan movement to an unintentional extent (for example, he originally clashed with Hellenism during the first few Percy Jackson & the Olympians books, but has since come forward with a more apologetic attitude on the subject).

Rick Riordan's influence extends especially to other writers from many different cultures and backgrounds. On several occasions, these authors have been permitted to work with Riordan to write their own stories in the Riordanverse based on mythology and folklore they're culturally familiar with. These books are marked under the imprint "Rick Riordan Presents," the most famous of which is the Hindu-based Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi.
