Phorcys is a Greek sea god, representing marine dangers, and the son of Pontus and Gaia. His wife is Ceto, who is also his sister. Other siblings include Nereus, Eurybia and Thaumas. He fathered many monstrous children with Ceto, including Echidna, the Gorgons, the Graeae, Scylla, Thoosa and Ladon. He was depicted as a fish-tailed merman with crab-claw fore-legs and red, spiked skin in Hellenic mosaics.
