The Shield of Achilles was an unnamed shield used by Achilles during his fight with Hector.

History[]

Illiad[]

Achilles lost his armour and weapons after lending them to his comrade Patroclus, who was killed in battle by Hector. Patroclus' armor and weapons were taken as spoils. Achilles’ mother Thetis asks the god Hephaestus to provide replacement armor for her son. Hephaestus forged a new armor for Achilles and provided him a new shield.

Achilles used this shield in his battle against Hector, as described in the passage in Book 18, lines 478–608 of Homer’s Iliad.

The shield was forged by the god of fire Hephaestus.
